Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif resigned from his position as president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Monday.
In light of Shehbaz’s resignation, the PML-N has decided to call a general council meeting in Lahore on May 28 to nominate a new president.
In a recent news conference, Rana Sanaullah stated that the PML-N Punjab branch has asked Nawaz Sharif to take up the party presidency once more, stressing the importance of his leadership to the party’s achievements.
Following his conviction in 2018, the former prime minister was barred from holding any public office.

In the Avenfield and Al-Azizia referrals, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) cleared him on November 29 and December 12, respectively, of last year. The former prime minister ran for office in the General Elections of 2024 and won from NA-130 Lahore after being found not guilty.
The information was revealed during the party’s meeting in Model Town, Lahore, today. Several PML-N heavyweights, including Khawaja Saad Rafique, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, and others, attended the meeting.
Ahsan Iqbal, the head of the PML-N, presided over the meeting, which accepted Shehbaz’s resignation as the party’s president.
