Pakistan Reports Fifth Polio Case of 2024, Raising Concerns of a Resurgence

After four cases were previously announced by Pakistan, this is the fifth occurrence of polio in 2024. Three cases were reported from Balochistan, while one case was from Sindh.

Six cases of polio were reported in the nation last year; two instances were from Karachi and four were from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Highly contagious, polio can result in paralysis, impairment, and even death. Pakistan has been striving to vaccinate millions of children under the age of five in order to stop the spread of the illness, as vaccination is the most effective approach to prevent polio.

In order to conduct a coordinated polio vaccination campaign, the World Health Organization (WHO) has been collaborating with Pakistan and Afghanistan, the only two nations where the disease is still endemic.
