Siraj-ul-Haq, the prominent figure in Pakistani politics and the Amir (chief) of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), announced his resignation on Monday following the party’s dismal performance in the recent Elections 2024. The decision came after JI secured no seats in the National Assembly and only two seats in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly.

Who is Sirajul Haq?
Siraj-ul-Haq is a key figure in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s political landscape, rose to prominence within Jamaat-e-Islami. In 2014, he was elected as the new ameer of the party, succeeding Syed Munawar Hassan. Haq won the majority vote in the elections held at the JI Headquarters Mansoora, securing his position for a five-year tenure.
He was re-elected in 2019, serving the party diligently for a decade before his recent resignation.
Siraj ul Haq was born on April 5, 1962, in the Lower Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. He received his early education in his hometown and later pursued a degree in Pharmacy from the University of Peshawar. Earlier in the day, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, a prominent figure within JI, made headlines by announcing his decision to vacate his seat in the provincial assembly. Citing widespread ‘electoral malpractice,’ Rehman specifically pointed to the PS-129 Central Karachi constituency of the Sindh Assembly, where he had previously secured a seat.
During a press conference in Karachi, Rehman expressed deep concerns over the integrity of the electoral process, accusing the authorities of orchestrating what he termed as “the worst rigging.” He emphasized JI’s stance on the matter, asserting that the electoral process had been marred by gross malpractice.
