Former Pakistan team director, Mohammad Hafeez, recently shared how he convinced Babar Azam to change his batting position for the benefit of the team during the recent T20I series against New Zealand.
In an interview with a local sports channel, Hafeez explained that he spent about two months persuading Babar and Mohammad Rizwan about the importance of team spirit in cricket. He reminded them that while they are both excellent players, cricket is a team sport where everyone’s contribution matters.
“I had to convince Babar Azam that playing for Pakistan is bigger than individual achievements. I suggested that Babar should bat at number three, a position he has excelled in during ODI cricket. I assured him that he has the skills to shine in this role,” said Hafeez.

Hafeez expressed his gratitude to Babar for accepting the change and playing for Pakistan’s success.
“Thank you to him for accepting this change and playing for Pakistan at number three, which I believe is the best decision,” he added.
It’s important to note that Babar had been opening the T20 matches with Rizwan for over two years. However, Hafeez’s suggestion for Babar to bat at number three, a position he’s comfortable with in One-Day matches, proved to be a strategic move. Babar’s willingness to adapt highlights his dedication to the team’s success over personal achievements.
Hafeez’s guidance and Babar’s flexibility show the importance of teamwork and adaptability in cricket, ultimately contributing to Pakistan’s performance in the T20I series against New Zealand.
