Bangladesh, chasing 125, reached their goal when Mahmudullah took a single from Dasun Shanaka; however, an overthrow guaranteeing another run saw the match end in 19 overs.
Bangladesh’s start was not ideal, though, as Soumya Sarkar was dismissed by Dhananjaya de Silva on the third delivery of the innings.
Nuwan Thushara, in the meantime, claimed two wickets to severely hamper Bangladesh’s efforts, bringing them down to 28-3 in 5.2 overs.
After that, Towhid Hridoy came to bat with Litton Das, scoring 40 runs in 20 balls during their 63-run partnership, raising the team’s total to 91.
During his knock, Hridoy hit four sixes, including three straight sixes off Sri Lankan skipper Wanindu Hasaranga in the 11th over, before collapsing on the fourth ball of the over.
Hasaranga struck again in the next over, dismissing Das, who was playing at 36 off 38.
Mahmudullah held on to one end, while wickets kept falling on the other end as Thushara picked two consecutive wickets in the 18th over.
To close up the match, Mahmudullah struck the final 11 runs off Shanaka in the 19th over. Out of 13, the right-handed batter scored an undefeated 16.
With scores of 4–18, Thushara led Sri Lanka’s bowling attack, and Hasaranga claimed two wickets.
After Bangladesh asked Sri Lanka to bat, the latter took two wickets in the powerplay, but Pathum Nissanka did not back down.
With the help of seven boundaries and one six during his 28-ball stint, Nissanka scored 47 runs, reducing Sri Lanka to 70-3 when Mustafizur Rahman removed him.
Dhananjaya de Silva and Charith Asalanka scored 30 runs from 32 balls for the fourth wicket as Bangladesh took charge and made it difficult for Sri Lankan hitters to score runs.
To stop Sri Lanka’s momentum, young legspinner Rishad Hossain removed Wanindu Hasaranga, the incoming batsman, and Asalanka (19) off consecutive deliveries.
In the following over, Hossain also took advantage of Dhananjaya de Silva (21), leaving Sri Lanka reeling at 109-6.
