Muslim Nurse Fired for Calling Israel’s Gaza War “Genocide”

The hospital, NYU Langone Health, issued a statement on Thursday stating that Hesen Jabr, a labor and delivery nurse, had previously received a warning not to bring her opinions “on this divisive and charged issue into the workplace.”

When Jabr made her remarks on May 7, she wrote on Instagram that she had been awarded. She also mentioned that later that month, she received a letter terminating her employment.

She mentioned families who had lost children in the Gaza War during a section of her acceptance speech, stating that the honor was “deeply personal” to her.

Hesen Jabr is a labor and delivery nurse at NYU Langone Health. The hospital said in a statement on Thursday that she was previously warned not to bring her ideas “on this divisive and charged issue into the workplace.”

Jabr announced on Instagram that she had won an award when she made her comments on May 7. She added that she had gotten a letter ending her work later that month.

Without going into specifics regarding the earlier incident, the spokesperson stated, “She instead chose not to heed that at a recent employee recognition event that was widely attended by her colleagues, some of whom were upset after her comments.”

“Jabr is no longer employed by NYU Langone as a result.”

According to the local health ministry, approximately 36,000 people have died as a result of Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza over the last eight months. In addition to displacing almost all 2.3 million residents of the small coastal enclave, the war has also resulted in rampant starvation there.

In a portion of her acceptance speech, she spoke about families who had lost children in the Gaza War, saying that the honor was “deeply personal” to her.

The conflict, which has led to rising Islamophobia and antisemitism and widespread demonstrations in the U.S. and elsewhere, began when the Palestinian group Hamas, which governs Gaza, attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing around 1,200 and taking more than 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies.
