For the second time in Pakistan’s parliamentary history, Zardari became the country’s president after garnering the majority of votes cast in the electoral college, which is made up of the provincial assemblies and the parliament.
The PPP co-chairman garnered 411 votes, while Mehmood Khan Achakzai, the candidate supported by the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) and the home of PTI independents, only managed to collect 181 votes.
The nominee of the coalition government received 255 votes in a combined session of the National Assembly and Senate, while the candidate supported by the SIC only managed to garner 119 votes.
