The film, which was directed by Nag Ashwin, centers on a contemporary incarnation of the Hindu deity Vishnu, who is said to have come to Earth to save humanity from evil powers.
With a $72 million budget, the science fiction picture is reportedly the most expensive Indian movie ever. It will be released in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and English on June 27 in theaters across the globe.
Within two hours of its release on YouTube, the trailer amassed over two million views as it quickly became viral.
In a statement to Deadline, Nag Ashwin said that he has always been fascinated by Indian mythology and science fiction as a filmmaker.
“Merging these two elements in Kalki 2898 AD is nothing short of a dream made possible by the incredible talent and dedication of our artists and team. It has taken us a lot to witness this today,” he added.
Everyone involved in Kalki 2898 AD—from our producers and star actors to the bright, imaginative minds and whole crew—put their all into this movie. We hope that the teaser excites the Telugu audience and the country as a whole, making people eager for what’s to come,” Ashwin said.
A-list stars Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, and Amitabh Bachchan lead the title’s star-studded cast, which also features Kamal Haasan and Disha Patani in key parts.
