Whether you’re a die-hard horror game enthusiast with a taste for gore or a nostalgic Nintendo lover looking for something entertaining for family movie night, the finest video game movies have so much to offer that there’s something for everyone.
Uncharted (2022)
There was so much to like about Uncharted. Tom Holland, who portrays Nathan Drake, the main explorer, is a true star. Co-star Mark Wahlberg is one of his. Moreover, Ruben Fleischer, a director whose breakthrough picture Zombieland is still incredibly rewatchable, is a fitting choice. We regret to inform you that Uncharted has fallen short of its potential. This implies that there will still be some jokes, enormous action scenes, and different Tom Holland antics. All of it is condensed into a movie with erratic pacing and little character growth for the main character.
Assassin’s Creed (2016)
The Assassin’s Creed film’s creative team made the right decision. The game firm, Ubisoft, made the decision to take creative control of the project and appoint a dependable talent who was optimistic about the franchise’s future. Naturally, this talent was rising Hollywood star Michael Fassbender. Even if what he did with the movie may not have been a box office hit, it is an example of a skillfully crafted video game movie, with a careful and in-depth study of the narrative of the game series.
Tomb Raider (2018)

It appeared as though Tomb Raider would never reach its full potential on screen following Angelina Jolie’s mediocre take on the brand in the early 2000s. Aside from the heavy exploitation and misogyny in the games, the series itself is incredibly cinematic and provides the potential for a very strong female-led Indiana Jones-style movie series. Alicia Vikander had the lead role in this darker, more realistic version of Tomb Raider in 2018, and she did a fantastic job.
Mortal Kombat (1995)
Regarding the Mortal Kombat film, what more needs to be said than has already been said? It has a camp vibe. It’s thrilling. It is illogical. It’s outstanding. This techno-futuristic cage fight movie captures the essence of the ’90s perfectly, and it remains the most enjoyable video game movie ever made to this day. Yes, it might not be the most eminently “artistic” example presented here. However, Mortal Kombat is unmatched in its ability to encapsulate the spirit of a video game series.
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)
Listen, I would give “Speed Me Up”—the song of this summer, next summer, and summer after that—first place if I could. My editor, though, won’t let me. Rather, praise is due to the film itself, which surprised everyone by being a very enjoyable adventure for the blue guy—even after months of production issues. For better or ill, Sonic the Hedgehog will most likely always be the last film we saw in theatres prior to the epidemic.
